VISIT TO CSIR

VISIT to CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research)-CSIO (Central Scientific Instruments Organization)

Report by Mithun of Class IX C

We started from our school to the CSIR campus at Tharamani, Chennai at around 9:00am and reached there by 9:45am. We were then provided a guide to guide us through the whole campus.
We first saw a Documentary film for 15 minutes, about the CSIO which was very informative about the organization. Secondly, we went to Central Electrochemical Research Institute where we saw different types of models to produce electricity by chemical methods such as by breaking the hydrogen by anode cathode with electronegativity which produce's water and electricity to run fan's, light's etc. Then we went to a place where they explained us how to reduce the pollutants in our environment and how to break down the foams produced by the waste materials such as the foams in Dams which also contains bacteria. After this we went to the Wind engineering laboratory where they explained us how to construct a building which will also withstand the pressure exerted by the wind and they also showed us the wind tunnel which is used to test the model of the building which is going to be constructed by sucking the wind and applying the wind pressure from all direction on the model.
Then we had our lunch at the canteen. After our lunch we went to the Advanced Seismic Testing and research Laboratory, in this laboratory they told us that here they check the conditions of a model building to withstand the earthquake and so they have 2 shake tables in which they place the model building and shake the table so that they can check how the building withstands earthquake. At last we went to the Fatigue and Fracture Laboratory, here they have many chambers which carry out tests on materials and components with Hydraulics and surface crack growth.
And after the completion of this we then returned back to the school by 2pm.
